Srinagar, June 30: A 20-year old youth on Wednesday drowned in a stream at Kantpora area of Lolab in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday evening, locals and police said today.
Locals of the area told that Showkat Ahmad Mir, son of Manzoor Ahmad Mir, a resident of Kantpora, Lolab drowned in a nearby stream while he was taking a bath late yesterday today afternoon.
Soon after the news about his drowning spread, hundreds of locals assembled at the spot while teams of police and local administration also rushed. The authorities immediately started operation to retrieve the body of the deceased, they said.
Later in the evening, the rescue teams retrieved the body of the deceased from the stream, they said.
A police officer of the concerned police station while confirming the incident told that the youth’s body was retrieved from the nallah. The youth’s drowning has apparently caused after being struck in the mud.
A case under 174 CrPc has also been registered to know the actual cause of the death, the officer said.
He said that after conducting all legal formalities, the body of the deceased has been handed over to his family for last rites.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended in the hamlet after the body of the youth reached his native village.
