Srinagar, June 30: An encounter started between government forces and militants at Newa area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday.
Locals and witnesses told that forces in large numbers cordoned off the Malwari hamlet in Newa area since today morning.
A senior police officer when contacted said that acting on a tip off about the presence of some militants, army’s 50 RR, CRPF and SOG launched cordon-and-search operation at the Malwari village.
The forces, as such, intensified the cordon-and-search operation and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot, the officer said, adding that the militants believed to be two to three in number hiding inside the area opened fire, triggering off an encounter.
When reports last came in, the gunfight was going on in the area.
Soon after the news about the encounter spread in the area, the local youth took to streets and started pelting stones on forces.
