Kashmiri human rights activist, Khurram Parvez was formally released from police custody, today from the Joint Interrogation Centre, Jammu, at 12 noon. He was set at liberty after 76 days of incarceration, following the quashing of his preventive detention by the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, on 25th November 2016.
He is in good health and spirits. He expresses his overwhelming gratitude to the local and international solidarity campaign for his release. Khurram Parvez was lodged in Kotbalwal jail Jammu after his police detention.
Parvez was arrested from his home in Srinagar on September 16 and was booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Friday had termed his detention illegal and ordered his immediate release. However, he was kept in jail for days after the ruling because of a ‘minor error’ in the issue date of PSA warrant on his name.
Parvez was arrested just a day after he was barred from boarding a flight and leaving for Geneva where he was scheduled to attend a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The struggle for the release of Khurram Parvez is a part of the larger struggle against unlawful detentions, state impunity and the use of repressive laws such as PSA in J&K.
JKCCS reiterates its commitment to the struggle for truth, justice and the rights of all people of Jammu and Kashmir.
