People in Kashmir have found an innovative way to protect power transformers from the ‘wrath’ of government forces. In Apple town Sopore people have covered power transformers with sandbags.
The people’s move comes after a day when on Tuesday while foiling a pro-freedom rally at Panzipora government forces allegedly damaged several power transformers in and around Krankshivan area of Sopore town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Eyewitnesses said that people from different hamlets of Sopore town including Rahimsahab, Hathishah, Khankaq Mohalla, Ningli, Bhatpora, Arampora, Chinkipora, Chankhan, Kranshivan colony and Sangrampora erected sandbags around the power transformers.
“It is better to protect these transformers than to live under darkness,” said a local from Sangrampora.
Pertinently, people have been accusing government forces of damaging power transformers in different parts of Kashmir. During a protest march in Meemandar Shopian all but nine power transformers according to locals were damaged by government forces.
Though police refute the claims made by people, however, an official from Power Development Department said that such action from government forces will only drain the resources of their department and such elements should be reined in and taken to task who cause damage to these power transformers.
