Srinagar : Two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants were killed in a gunfight with joint team of police and army in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Wednesday, police said.
The encounter started earlier in the day when the joint team launched a cordon and search operation at Kujjar following information about the presence of the militants in the village.
The search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire on the joint team, which retaliated, a police official told GNS.
“Two militants were killed and their bodies retrieved from the site of encounter,” he said
The killed militants have been identified as Basit Amin Bhat of Frisal and Saqib Ahmad Lone of Hawoora, Kulgam, linked with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. “Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 02 AK rifles recovered.” According to police records, both were involved in several cases, he said.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, termed it a big success and congratulated the joint team of police and army for conducting the operation without any collateral damage. Cordon and search operation will continue in the area, the police official added. (GNS)
