Srinagar, : Two militants including LeT commander Uzair Khan were killed in Gadole operation which lasted seven days in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said on Tuesday.
“So far, LeT commander Uzair Khan’s body has been recovered. The dead body of another (militants) is visible, but it has not been possible to retrieve it yet,” Additional Director General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar told reporters in Anantnag.
“There is a huge area that remains to be searched. There can be a lot of unexploded shells which will be recovered and destroyed. We appeal to the people not to go to the area,” he said, adding, “Search operation will continue to locate if there is any more militant in the area.”
The top police officer said that said security forces had reports that two to three militants were there. “There is a possibility that the third dead body may be somewhere. It will be known after the search is complete,” he said.
Later in the evening, he told GNS he family members of LeT Commander Mohammad Uzair Khan have identified his body.
Uzair, according to police was commander of LeT and was killed in a gunfight with joint team of Police and army in Gadole Kokernag area of South Anantnag district.
“The family members have identified LeT commander Uzair’s body,” Kumar said.
The operation started following the killing of Colonel Manpreet Singh, commanding officer 19 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Ashish Dhonchak and Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat, besides another soldier on Wednesday.(GNS)
