Srinagar : Militants shot dead Kashmiri Pandit in Chowdari Gund area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.
A police spokesperson said that Senior Police officers alongwith reinforcement reached at the spot soon after the incident.
“At about 1250 hours, (militants) fired upon a civilian belonging to Minority Community identified as Shri Pooran Krishan Bhat son of Dwarka Nath Bhat while he was on way to orchard in Chowdari Gund in District Shopian,” a police spokesperson said in a statement. In this incident, he said, Bhat had received critical gunshot injuries and was immediately evacuated to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation, he said. “Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the crime while the whole area has been cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and search in the area is going on.”
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha described it a “dastardly act of cowardice”.
“My heartfelt condolences to bereaved family. I assure the people that the perpetrators and those aiding and abetting (militants) will be severely punished,” he said in a tweet.
National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah said, “I condemn the attack in unequivocal terms and express my heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved household. I pray for peace to the departed soul.”
Party’s vice president Omar Abdullah said, “Another reprehensible attack. I unequivocally condemn this attack in which Pooran Krishan Bhat has lost his life. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. May Pooran ji’s soul rest in peace.” (GNS)
