Srinagar, April 25: Two militants were killed in an encounter at Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday.
Reports said that a joint team of army’s 3 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Bagender Mohalla in Bijbehara today wee hours.
“During searches in the area, militants fired upon the search party leading to an encounter,” a police spokesman said in a statement.
During the course of gunfight, two militants were killed and the bodies were recovered along with arms and ammunition, the spokesman said.
The spokesman identified the slain as Safdar Amin resident of Bijbehara and Burhan Ahmad Ganaie alias Saifullah resident of Anantnag.
“According to the police records, both the slain were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. They were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of attacks including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities. Several crime cases were registered against them,” the spokesman said.
According to police records Safdar Amin had a long history of crime records and several cases were registered against him for planning and executing attacks in the area. Similarly, Burhan Ganaie was also involved in several cases, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, after conducting all legal formalities, the bodies of the slain militants were handed over to their respective families for last rites, a police officer said.
Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of both the militants at their respective native places. The slain were later buried amid pro-freedom slogans and spontaneous shutdown.
Following the killing, stone pelting clashes erupted at Zirpara Bijbehara and Lasibal Anantnag. (GNS)
