Ganderbal: Sonamarg and its surrounding areas Zojila recorded the season’s first snowfall today dipping the day temperature sharply.
The snowfall began around 3 am. and by the Wednesday it had accumulated to 2 inch depth. The snow depth recorded in the nearby Thajiwas glacier area was around 2.5 inches.
Director Meteorological department, Sonam Lotus, said, “We are expecting a spell of light rain between November 14 and 15.
Lotus said the longest dry spells in the past couple of decades were witnessed in 2016 and 2017 and no rainfall was recorded in October, November and December in 2007.
“A Western Disturbance is approaching that will subsequently results in rains in plains and snow at hills, officials said.
Light snowfall was recorded in Sonamarg and Thajwas while rains in plains at Ganderbal District, reports said.
With the fall in day temperature, people across the valley have started putting on warm clothes.
