Two local militants have been killed in a brief shootout at Handawara area of Kupwara district on Monday evening, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said that the militants this evening fired upon a joint party of police and army near Galganzer, Zacheldara in Rajwar area of Handwara. He said the attack was however repulsed and both the militants were gunned in exchange of fire which continued for few minutes.
The spokesman said that both the militants have been identified as Toyib of Sopore and Ashiq of Palhallan in Baramulla district. He said the duo was affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. “Further investigation and legal formalities have been started,” he said. Meanwhile, the telecom companies have been directed by authorities to snap internet in Sopore, Palhallan and Handwara areas of north Kashmir in the wake of militant killings.
