Police detain youth having surname ‘Abbas’
Central Reserve Police Force personnel known for displaying ‘hooliganism’ across Kashmir Valley roughed up a hawker at Nai Basti area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag town on Monday. The hawker Shahid Ahmed Sheikh was busy in selling newspapers when some CRPF personnel thrashed him with gun buts and sticks. The hawker said that CRPF accused him of disturbing peace in the area by selling ‘peace threatening’ newspapers.
“Their action was unprovoked. I was doing my business when without any reason they pounced upon me and thrashed me. They even tore my newspapers while ironically their officer was deriving pleasure while they were dragging and hitting me,” he said.
Meanwhile, a youth from uptown area of Srinagar city alleged that he was detained at police station Karan Nagar for having surname as ‘Abbas’. “Though I am a Sunni Muslim but the policemen bundled me into the vehicle and lodged at police station Karan Nagar after they checked my identity card. They even advised me to change the name,” Muhammad Abbas told CNS adding that he was released from the Police Station after the intervention of a Journalist.
