ATM Frauds continue to haunt people of Jammu and Kashmir with police receiving numerous complaints about withdrawal of money by online hackers who use cloned cards to make transactions.
If sources are to be believed, lakhs of rupees have been siphoned from the back accounts by “hackers” based in Delhi and other states who take account details from gullible ATM users by impersonating as officers from their banks.
The incidents of such frauds are particularly on rise in Bishnah and Bari Brahamana area where police is receiving frequent complaints. Many victims of ATM fraud believe that the hackers steal details by hacking CCTV cameras footages installed in the ATMs and use cloned cards to steal the money. “After stealing the details through cameras, the hackers ask for “One Time Passwords (OTPs)” of the customers and then withdraw amounts on their behalf sitting in other states” they alleged. They also alleged that local police authorities are reluctant to file FIRs in such cases.
“Yes we have been receiving many complaints from a number of people about the online fraud”, SSP Samba-Joginder Singh
said. On reluctance of registering FIRs by police alleged by victims, he said, “It depends upon the severity of the case. As and when the registration is required, our officers are registering the FIRs”.
