Police on Thursday resorted to tear smoke shelling in Papchan area of Bandipora when residents, mostly youth clashed with government forces who tried to disperse people holding sit-in protest in the area.
Earlier, in the morning people from Papachan, Madar and Gamoora assembled near the local Jamia Masjid to hold special prayers for Burhan Wani and 67 other civilians killed by government forces since July 8.
As the people started reciting special prayers police reached the spot to disperse them, however youth present there clashed with them. Police fired dozens of tear smoke canisters in retaliation. Scores of youth have sustained minor injuries.
Witnesses said the forces intercepted a peaceful protest rally and resorted to teargas shelling in the area.
Meanwhile, residents in Ward 6 of Bandipora have erected a tent on road for a sit-in protest.
Protest demonstrations were also reported from Naidkhi and Nowgam areas of Sumbal.
