Protests erupt in city parts as Bemina youth’s body arrives
Slain laid to rest amid pro-freedom slogans
Protests and stone pelting clashes erupted at Bemina, Batmaloo and its adjacent parts in Srinagar city, after the body of the slain youth Tanveer Sultan (31) S/O Sheikh Sultan R/O Ibrahim Colony Bemina, Srinagar arrived here.
Tanveer’s body was expected to arrive from Kud in Udhampur district of Jammu region yesterday late in the afternoon. However, the body of the deceased has been handed over to his relatives today morning.
Soon after the body of the deceased youth reached Bemina, people in large numbers who were already waiting there started chanting pro-freedom slogans.
Forces used few tear smoke shells to quell the protesters and chased away the protesting youth.
In the meantime, hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers at Bemina and later when the body of the youth was taken to martyrs graveyard in Batmaloo area, the people in large numbers there also held funeral prayers.
“Tanvir was laid to rest adjacent to his elder brother, who was a militant commander, is buried as well”.
Meanwhile, the body of the youth was laid to rest amid sobs.
Pertinently, Tanveer according to police was killed in an exchange of fire with forces at Kud in Udhampur district on Monday.
Yesterday, the government told the assembly that during a search of the bus on Srinagar-Jammu highway, at Kud, Tanveer fired at the police/CRPF team after nearly all passengers got down. Besides Tanveer, a woman was also killed and two other civilians were wounded, government spokesman Naeem Akhtar said.
An AK-47 rifle and a pistol were recovered from him, Akhtar had said.
The family of the slain youth contested the police and government claim that he was a militant.
“How can an active militant live and stay at home,” the family had asked.
The family of Tanveer said that he was a psychiatric patient and had been getting treatment in a hospital in Amritsar.
