Four suspected militants and a policeman died and another was injured in four separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday, police sources said.
Three of the encounters were with militants who were trying to infiltrate in Tangdhar, Gurez and Nowgam sectors, they said adding the other was between the forces and a group of militants who had hold up in a building in Poonch.
The encounter in Poonch started after the police received information about the presence of two heavily-armed militants in an under construction government building. The building is close to an army camp.
As government forces cordoned off the building, they came under heavy firing, during which a policeman died and a sub inspector was injured. The army was later rushed to deal with the militants and the encounter was still on.
In another encounter near the Line of Control in Nowgam Sector, in north Kashmir, sources claimed the killing of four militants.
The encounter started after the army intercepted an armed group of militants trying to infiltrate. Four militants were later killed. Defence sources said that four AK-47 rifles and a large cache of ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter.
Two more infiltration attempts have been foiled in Tangdhar and Gurez sectors, defence sources said.
