Says will continue to protest until JKBA president returns safely.
Jammu and Kashmir Bar Association (JKBA) on Tuesday staged protest against the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for summoning its president Mian Abdul Qayoom fro ‘questioning’.
The Bar association members assembled outside High Court (HC) here and chanted slogans against Government of India (GoI) and NIA.
The protesting members were also holding banners displaying ‘attack on Mian Qayoom is attack on judiciary’.
Talking to reporters here, a senior JKBA member and senior lawyer, Advocate Zaffar Shah said that the summoning the Bar association president is tantamount to the attack on the judiciary. “NIA must visit Valley to question the JKBA president here rather than summoning him to New Delhi,” he said.
He said that the lawyers will continue to stay away from work until JKBA president returns “with dignity” to the Valley.
Earlier, Mian Qayoom has been asked to reach the Delhi office of NIA tomorrow to “answer certain questions” related to the alleged terror funding case.
“We feel that the (NIA) notice is not bonafide. It is the outcome of a design, of a conspiracy to lower down the credibility of our public men,” Shah told reporters, adding that the NIA could have recorded the statement of Mian Qayoom in Srinagar as well.
“Mian Qayoom is not involved in such case at all but at the same time if the NIA wanted to record his statement or to question him, we strongly condemn his summoning to New Delhi. The questioning could have been done even at Srinagar if it was a simple case of recording the statement for a witness or seeking information from him,” Shah said.
He said that by summoning him to New Delhi, he said, “we feel that our respectable persons are being humiliated”.
“We feel NIA is abusing its authority. We feel process of law is being abused,” said Shah.
Meanwhile, the protesting lawyers later dispersed peacefully. (KNS)
