At least six cops, who were on duty, were injured after army troops thrashed them for allegedly stopping their vehicle in Gund area of Ganderbal district late Friday night.
Top police officials told Rising Kashmir that army personnel (in civvies) of 24 RR who was coming in four vehicles from Sonmarg after performing Yatra were stopped by policemen in Gund late last night at a routine vehicle check.
Sources said the Police men were roughed up by Army personnel when cops stopped them at Gund Nakkah.
“While leaving from Sonmarg, the Army personnel didn’t stop at Nakkah and then they were stopped at Gund which followed an altercation between Army, police personnel and locals residents,” said top police officer.
He said the Police cops had no knowledge that they were Army men since they were in civvies.
“There is a cut-off time for Yatra vehicles after that they are not allowed to move from Sonmarg. There are Nakkahs established at various places and there is no problem with the movement of travelers after ROP is closed,” the officer said and questioned the behavior of Armymen since they could have normally informed cops on duty.
Sources told Rising Kashmir that the policemen were saved by the locals from the clutches of Army.
They said army men called other nearby camps who reached the police station Gund and roughed up other policemen present there. The injured cops were hospitalized after the thrashing.
Srinagar-based Defence Spokesperson Rajesh Kalia said,” We are gathering details about the incident and same will be shared accordingly.”
