College students in frontier Kupwara are compelled to move outside their district for graduation as the only government degree college has limited number of subjects and it lacks infrastructure.
Students of the college said that since its establishment in 1987 only few subjects like BCA and Commerce have been added till now.
“Currently there are only four streams in the College and students who wish to pursue their education in other subjects have no other option than to migrate towards Srinagar or Baramulla colleges,” the students said.
They said that those who want to study subjects like Sociology, Psychology, Geography, Mass Communication, Biotechnology and other professional subjects, are not available here in the college.
Besides poor infrastructure, the students complained of lack of teachers too. They said that the college relies on contractual staff which is appointed after months.
In Science stream, introduced in 1995 with only four subjects, not a single subject has been added till date as compared to other colleges which have full-fledged science stream with Geology, Geography, Biotechnology and other courses.
They demanded more streams to be added in Social science like Islamic studies, Psychology, and other allied subjects.
The students said that the successive and the present legislators of the district have not yet take up the issues with the government.
Principle Government Degree College Kupwara Farooq Ahmad Malik told KNS that they have taken up the issue with higher authorities to add more subjects and upgrade the infrastructure Kupwara College so student have not to move outside district for pursuing education in their interest courses.
“I am hopeful that we will get more streams soon, and we are committed to enhance college infrastructure,” he told KNS. (KNS)
