Three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants and minor girl were killed while another minor boy as well as a policeman was injured in a fierce gunfight at Hyhama area of Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Wednesday.
A police spokesman based in Srinagar said acting on specific information, police along with 41 RR of army and 98 Battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Jugtiyal village of Hyhama in Kupwara district.
“During the searches, militants present in the area fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” he said. Three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in this encounter, said the police and added that the identity of these militants is being ascertained.
The spokesman of the J&K police said one police constable identified as Danish Ahmad was also injured in the encounter. He was shifted to Srinagar hospital for treatment. However, in a tragic incident, a minor brother-sister duo was hit by bullets, resulting in death of the minor girl identified as Kaneeza.
Police said that the duo was hit by “stray bullets” and they were standing 100 meters away from the gunfight site. The boy was identified as Faisal and both of them were shifted to hospital but the girl succumbed. Police said the boy has been referred to Srinagar and his condition is stable so far. (GNS)
