Jammu, Mar 08 (KNS): While extending revolutionary greetings on International Women’s Day, senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has said that this day draws its history from March 8, 1857 when women across classes, regions, communities raised the demand for women emancipation.
Stating that women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievements worldwide but progress towards gender parity is not encouraging, the CPI(M) leader said adding that it is not a coincidence but a consequence of the failures of the feudal and capitalist systems, the inequality between nations, social classes, the rich and the poor and between men and women, making lives of masses particularly women more miserable.
Urging the women to fight for a better world where they would be free from exploitation and gender based discrimination, he stressed that the huge increase in violence against women require sustained efforts to build up broad based resistance through united actions by women organizations and groups.
It is only when the women get equal rights and equal opportunities that the society can progress and create a livable social order. The women activists must unitedly resist the policies of the government which are responsible for not providing enough opportunities to them in the field of education and livelihood. They can shape better future only through united struggles and for that every effort by fundamentalists of different hues to divide the ranks of women on the basis of religion, caste and region must be resisted. The need of the hour is to build a united platform to thwart the designs of gender disparity. There is a need for a comprehensive campaign against the obscurantism, exploitation and violence against the women. He demanded enactment of legislation for providing 1/3rd representation of women in the state legislature.
The CPI(M) leader said that this day is a collective day of global celebrations which also makes a call to action for accelerating gender parity. (KNS)
