Over 6000 people have been injured over the past one month by government forces across Kashmir with around 800 cases reported on Friday (August 5) alone, according to the medical staff posted at various hospitals.
While more than 2500 critically injured persons were treated at SKIMS Soura, SMHS Hospital and SKIMS Bemina, nearly 3500 injured were managed by doctors in different district and sub-district hospitals across the valley.
According to official figures, over 4000 cases of firearm injuries have been registered at various hospitals and health centres. The injured have received bullets, pellets and teargas shells, leaving some of them permanently disabled. Besides, around 2000 people have been injured in incidents of beating, baton charge and stone pelting across the Valley.
On Friday the hospitals witnessed huge influx of the injured. According to an official report of the health department, among the 800 injured, the highest number (190) was reported from Budgam followed by Kupwara (110), Baramulla (97), Kulgam (80), Anantnag (31), Shopian (20) and Pulwama (13).
“Many injured were in bad condition which forced us to refer them immediately to SMHS hospital and SKIMS Soura,” said a senior medico of district Budgam. He said he has never seen such a grave situation since the “2010 bloodshed”. “Young boys and elderly persons have been injured in vital organs,” he said.
In the ongoing unrest since July 9, the highest number (805) of injuries have been reported from Anantnag followed by Pulwama (667). As per the official report, over 500 injured persons have been operated for major and minor surgeries in various districts hospitals. District Hospital Anantnag and Pulwama operated nearly 200 injured persons who had received bullets and pellets in vital organs, the report added.
A senior official in CMO office Pulwama told Rising Kashmir that the hospitals of the district admitted nearly 667 injured persons since July 9. “Among the 13 injured persons received on Friday we referred five who were hit in the eye,” he said.
The official said doctors managed the injured in SDH Pampore, SDH Tral, CHC Rajpora, PHC Tahab besides District Hospital Pulwama.
Medical Superintendent, SMHS Hospital, Dr Nazir Choudhary told Rising Kashmir they received 135 injured on Friday, taking the toll of the injured persons treated at the hospital to 940.
According to Dr Farooq A Jan, Medical Superintendent of SKIMS Soura, 180 injured were admitted to the hospital since July 8 evening while 12 injured were admitted on Friday.
Medical Superintendant, Bone and Joint Hospital, Dr Rashid Badoo said the hospital admitted nearly 114 patients since July 9, with most of them with grave limb fractures.
“Some of them had serious nerve injuries which was difficult to manage. We have put them on follow-up treatment,” he said.
At SKIMS Bemina, the doctors have treated 278 injures persons so far with 19 received on Friday alone.
