Scores of women today staged a protest and blocked Kupwara-Srinagar Highway at Wapora in north Kashmir against water scarcity.
Eyewitnesses told that women protesters from Kawari village of Handwara in Kupwara district while holding empty water pots appeared at Wadpora near Natnussa along Kupwara-Srinagar Highway and blocked vehicular movement.
The women protesters were demanding adequate water supply to their village. “We are facing acute water scarcity from past several days. We even requested concerned authorities to ensure the water supply but they turned blind eye,” said the protesters.
Amid anti-government sloganeering, the protesters did not allow any vehicle to proceed from either side of the highway, resulting in traffic jam and massive inconvenience to the passengers. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
