Violent protesters on Tuesday set ablaze a police vehicle (Tata 407) at Shiva area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The people mostly youth were protesting against the killing of Hizbul-Mujahideen commander Sameer Ahmad Wani alias Jan, a resident of Dooru, Sopore in a gunfight at Nagri area of Kupwara in the northern district today morning.
Massive protests erupted at Shiva, Dooru and its adjoining areas soon after the news about the killing of the HM militant Sameer Wani spread in the area.
Chanting pro-freedom slogans and anti-India slogans, the youth also clashed with forces by pelting stones on them.
In the meantime, a police vehicle bearing registration numberJK15-4530 was stopped by the large number of protesting people and later set it on fire at Shiva area.
The incident occurred when a police team was carrying an inmate Khursheed Ahmad Wagay from Kupwara jail to session Judge Bandipora for court hearing.
In the incident, the police party along with the inmate left the spot and reached the nearby police station safely.
Similarly, reports of intense clashes were reported at Nagri, Kawardi and its adjacent areas in Kupwara district.
Eyewitnesses told that the youth were seen on motorbikes in Drugmulla, chanting pro-freedom slogans while the procession taking the body of the slain militant towards his native village in Sopore.
Police retaliated by teargas shells and also fired several gunshots in air to chase away the protesting youth.
However, when reports last came in, the clashes were going on in the areas.
