Horticulture Department has identified two villages in Akhnoor tehsil for developing these as the model Mango villages during current rainy season.
Each with the area of over 100 hectares potential land, the villages include Malla Barode in Khour block and Sungal in Akhnoor block.
About 25 hectare area each shall be planted in both villages in 1st phase wherein quality planting material comprising of normal spacing and high density shall be procured from Departmental nurseries.
Both the villages are famous for Mango production and mostly sucking and pickle making varieties are grown in these villages.
Pit digging work over an area of 15 hectare has already been completed involving 46 beneficiaries of Malla Barode village. The germplasm of existing varieties shall also be preserved.
Director Horticulture Jammu A. K Sharma during his recent visit to the area interacted with the growers and apprised them about different activities to be taken up under the project. He advised the growers to adopt low cost technologies such as INM/IPM practices, use of Vermicompost, bio-pesticides etc. which are being made available to increase the production of the fruit.
