Two minors including a boy and a girl drowned in two separate incidents in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday.

“Nusrat Nazir (9) D/o Nazir Ahmed Dar R/o Kathpora Hajin slipped to death while taking bath in river Jehlum near Markundal village”, a police officer told news agency GNS.

Soon after the incident, some locals jumped into the river and they tried to save the girl from drowning but failed, the official said.

The officer said that the body of the deceased Nusrat had gone to relatives place where she had later gone to river Jhelum near Markundal village. “She accidentally slipped and drowned to death in the river”.

The officer said that  in another similar incident another minor boy identified as Umar Bashir Najar (14) S/o Bashir Ahmed R/o Ajas drowned while taking bath in flood channel near Ajas.

At both the places, police have retrieved the bodies of the duo and later taken to hospital for postmortem, he said.

After conducting all legal formalities, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families for last rites.

He said that police have initiated 174 Cr PC proceedings in both the incidents.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended at both the villages when the bodies of the duo reached their respective places.
