Police Friday foiled the protest march of Jammu and Kashmir Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (AWHU) and detained scores of them.
The protestors assembled at Press Enclave here and raised anti-government and pro-justice slogans.
They were demanding gratuity, formulation of pension scheme, immediate enhancement of their remuneration, payment of minimum wages and withdrawal of attempts to privatize ICDS.
Carrying banners, placards, they also demanded regularization of their services as Class III and Class IV employees with immediate increase in their honorarium to Rs. 5000 and Rs 4000 per month respectively.
They said grassroots workers of the ICDS scheme should be entitled to decent living.
They added that a standing mechanism must be put in place in Ministry of Women and Child Development for revision in the rates of honorarium of Anganwadi workers and helpers.
“Anganwadi workers and helpers should be covered by the EPF and ESI Act for regularization of their services as government employee. Besides Anganwadi Centres must be made as nodal centers to impart pre-school education,” they said.
Police swung into action and detained scores of them as they tried to march towards to busy Residency Road.
