Police on Tuesday resorted to aerial firing to disperse protesters demonstrating after an army vehicle hit and injured a motorcyclist near Lawaypora on Srinagar-Baramulla highway.

Witnesses said that motorcyclist Bashir Ahmad Bhat of Check-e-Kawoosa was injured after an army vehicle, bearing registration number 14D 19471K, hit him on the highway near Lawapora.

He was rushed to SKIMS Bemina for treatment where from he was referred to SKIMS Soura for advanced treatment.

However, family sources said that he is stable.

As the news spread, the residents took to streets and staged massive demonstrations.

The protesters blocked the highway in protest, leading to a serpentine jam on the strategic road.

Police resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling to disperse the protesters, said a witness.

The clashes were going on at the time of filing of this report.
