Get your tenants verified: Police to house owners

‘Verification to ascertain identity of tenants’

Srinagar: A day after two militants were killed by police in Sarai Balla here, the police has appealed to house owners, who give their houses on rent in Srinagar to allow only verified tenants in their properties.

The police will begin verification of all the tenants and labourers who put up in the city.
“The verification will be done to ascertain the identity of the tenants,” DIG Central Kashmir, Ghulam Hassan Bhat told.

Thousands of people are living in the city from across the state and outside in different localities. Majority of them are students who put up as tenants who attend tuition in different coaching centers here. Of late, non-local labourers have surged in the Valley, and they too are living as tenants in the city.

The decision of the police assumes significance after the killing of two “foreign” Jaish-e-Muhammad militants in Sarai Balla in Magarmal Bagh on Monday late evening.

“We appeal the people to ask the tenants to get verification from police. Or the house owners, before they rent their houses, can ask the police to verify their tenants,” the senior police officer told.

Dismissing rumours that the two killed were local civilians, the DIG said that they were foreigners and have been staying in the house from the last five days.

“The two militants were staying as tenants in the house of a widow from the last five days. They had told the owner that they were students. They had brought books and a laptop with them. They had stayed there without getting any verification from police,” Bhat told.
“The house owner, not knowing they were militants, had allowed them to stay without verification,” he said.
