Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter at Saraibala in heart of the city here on Monday evening, police said.
The gunfight took place hours after three policemen, including an officer, were killed in twin militant attacks across the city earlier in the day.
A senior police official said that on a tip off JK Policemen cordoned off Saraibala area late this evening and launched house to house searches.
“Police party was fired upon from the house of one Ghulam Muhammad Hakim. The fire was retaliated triggering a gunfight in which two militants were killed.”
He identified one of the slain militants as Saifullah of Jamait-ul-Mujahideen. “The identity of another slain militant is being ascertained.”
The officer said that militant group had come from Sopore in north Kashmir. “We are ascertaining the facts,” he said.
The Director General of Police, K Rajendera said, “We had inputs about presence of two militants in the area and both have been eliminated. Operation is over.”
He said Saifullah was a JeM commander while the identity of another militant is being established.
“He too seems to be a foreigner,” the DGP said adding that one AK 47 Rifle, one pistol and some other weapons were recovered near the encounter site.
The DGP said no militant was arrested alive from the spot.
