Lankan landslide death toll rises to 64, 131 missing

Colombo:Floods and landslides caused by torrential rains with gale force winds in Sri Lanka have left 64 people dead, 131 missing and over 319,000 displaced from homes while over a 4,27,000 people are affected by the adverse weather, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said today.

The DMC said it is coordinating response activities and rescue operations with the tri-forces and police through District Secretariats and District Disaster Management Coordinating Units, reports Lanka Page.

About 440 houses are reported to be fully damaged and 3,463 houses partially damage by floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army said its Rescue & Relief Operations are in full swing under the Army Commander’s close supervision.

Responding to the requests for assistance, the Army has supplied cooked meal packets to the people affected by the flooding of Kelani River in addition to its rescue and recovery operations in landslide areas and evacuations of elderly people.
