As part of ‘Hafta-e-Shahadat’ programme, the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) and Valley’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, led a huge pro-freedom rally from Jama Masjid to Hawal in memory of his late father and Hawal martyrs.
According to correspondents, nearly two thousand people including activists of Awami Action Committee headed by Mirwaiz assembled in and outside Jama Masjid. After the Friday congregational prayers were over, the people led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq took out a rally amid slogans in favours of Islam, freedom and martyrs.
According to eyewitnesses, the people were holding flags of AAC, Pakistan, ISIS and also Lashkar-e-Toiba. They said the youth present in the rally shouted slogans in favour of Afzal Guru, Ajmal Kasab and militants.
The rally led by Mirwaiz passed through Gojwara and reached ‘Shaheedi Chowk’ Hawal where Mirwaiz paid tributes to innocent people killed in firing of government forces in 21 May 1990. Pertinently over 50 people were killed when forces opened fire on mourners carrying body of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq – who was killed by unidentified gunmen at his Nigeen residence.
On the occasion, Mirwaiz vowed to carry on the ‘mission of martyrs to its logical end’ and asked people to safeguard the sacrifices of martyrs. He urged people to make ‘Eidgah Chalo’ tomorrow successful and march in huge numbers towards Martyrs’ graveyard.
