Srinagar: A complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir on Saturday on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.

Hurriyat Conference (M) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for a complete shutdown today and had appealed people to reach Martyrs Graveyard at Eidgah. However, authorities had put-in “curfew like restrictions” in the Old Srinagar areas and foiled the programme.

Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq was shot dead at his Nigeen residence on May 21, 1990 by unidentified gun men. On same day, A G Lone was killed in Eidgah by unknown gunmen in 2002.

Srinagar administration had ordered restrictions in city areas falling under jurisdiction of police station Khanyar, Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal, Maisuma and Nigeen.
Police sources said Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Ayaz Akbar, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Raja Mehraj -ud-Din and Mohammed Ashraf Laya, Shahid Ul Islam were placed in their respective residences.
Although, minor traffic is plying on Srinagar roads uninterrupted, reports of shutdown were also received from other district headquarters.
