5 men died, cleaning an unused well

New Delhi: Five men died in Haryana while trying to revive an unused well , the police said on Tuesday, as the country reels under one of the worst droughts on record.

Five men were killed by toxic gas in the pit of the well in the Jind district on Monday when they went in to clean it.

“The well had not been in use for about five to six years and a poisonous gas had formed in its depths. The five men inhaled that and died,” local deputy police chief Virender Singh told news agency AFP.

The deceased were identified as Sanjay (23), Sukhchain (20), Mahipal (36) , Mohan (18) and Dinesh (24).
