A non-local man was held in Sangam area of Anantnag district for allegedly trying to abduct children.
The police however have let go of the man saying that he was just a drug addict roaming aimlessly but the locals have contested police claims.
According to reports the man, from Bihar, was chased and held by locals after a woman raised hue and cry alleging that he tried to abduct her daughter in Astanpora-Panjpora locality of Sangam on Thursday.
The locals said that the man was carrying some powdered substance and tried to destroy it while he was nabbed by the people.
“He also told people that they were a gang of 20 and it was futile catching him alone,” the locals said.
In charge police post Sangam, Inspector Muhammad Ashraf, however blamed people for making up stories.
“He was just a drug addict and I could not have kept him into custody because we did not have a case against him. Besides, what if he died in police custody?” said Ashraf.
